Through an interdisciplinary practiced focused on installation, photography and sculpture, Meichen Waxer consistently engages in questions surrounding culturally inherited power structures and resulting modes of representation. She draws primary reference from domestic materials, architecture and ornamentation to explore relationships laden with symbolic significance straddling the personal and social. Waxer’s practice employs personal experiences and references to create works that both highlight and cut across the connections and differences between disparate periods and aesthetics.
Meichen holds a MAA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design, as well as a BFA from the Ontario College of Art and Design University. Meichen was recently an artist in residence at Halka Sanat (Istanbul, Turkey) and Turkish Cultural Foundation Fellow, as well as artist in residence at 33 Officina Creativa (Toffia, Italy). Recent exhibitions include Charles H. Scott (Vancouver), Halka Sanat (Istanbul), , Open Studio (Toronto), and Milk Glass (Toronto). Meichen currently sits of the Board of Directors at Or Gallery (Vancouver).
